Double drop deck trailers are similar to drop deck trailers, with one major difference: they drop below the trailer axles, not just the truck axles, creating a well between the gooseneck and the first trailer axle. There are two common types of double drop trailers: fixed neck double drop and removable gooseneck double drop. The fixed neck double drop trailer has a gooseneck that is permanently attached to the well of the trailer, while the removable gooseneck double drop trailer has a neck that can be removed. All double drop deck trailers are made out of steel, aluminum, or a combination of steel and aluminum.

When Should You Use a Double Drop Deck Trailer for Shipping?

Double drop deck trailers are ideal for load proportions that are just barely above the legal parameters of an over-dimensional shipment because this type of trailer is specifically designed to carry taller freight. Double drop deck trailers achieve maximum legal load heights by bringing the height of the cargo bed as low as 18 inches off the ground, adding a considerable 3 feet to height clearance. This means that you will be able to legally ship freight with a height limit of 11 feet and 6 inches. This type of trailer also has a much lower center of gravity compared to standard flatbeds, which most drivers tend to find safer.

Double drop deck trailers have the same applications as flatbeds with an added height clearance. This includes shipments that:
