Preparing your goods for shipping

freight shipping preparation

No matter what it may be that you are shipping by freight, large boxes or pallets, there are a number of important logistics to be aware of in order to be prepared. Once you have determined the method of shipping you will be preparing your goods for shipping. Rules and guidelines are highly regulated when shipping goods and not following the proper procedures can result in lost time, wasted money, frustration and perhaps legal ramifications. Here are a few items to keep in mind while preparing your goods for shipping.

Proper Packaging

Proper packing of your goods is essential for the safety of the people involved in handling your shipment as well as to protect your items for being damaged. For example, if you are shipping a pallet, it should be wrapped tightly as one unit. This will secure all items during the transportation process while the truck is in motion and potentially come to a sudden stop.

Bill of Lading Labels

You must complete a Bill of Lading for each piece of your shipment. This is a legal contract between the shipper and the carrier. The Bill of Lading outlines exactly what it is that is being shipped, the location of where the item is being shipped from and where it will be shipped to. These labels can be purchased from a post office, shipping company or most office supply stores and should be legible and complete. If items are packaged in boxes and are not identifiable, they should have labels to identify them especially if they are hazardous materials. If the shipment is inspected this will avoid the authorities needing additional time to open up packaging. If you are shipping your freight with C&D Logistics we will complete the bill of lading and send it to you upon completion.
