Step Deck Trailers: When Should You Use Them For Shipping?

Not many people often consider that, when it comes to shipping your load or goods, certain trailers or trucks are built to transport different things. At C&D Logistics, we understand that one of the main benefits of using a freight shipping service from a shipping company is that we can match your load with the best-suited truck or trailer.

Should you use a flat deck truck for shipping your freight?

What is a Step Deck Trailer?

A step deck trailer has no sides, roof, or doors, resembling a platform. This type of trailer is a semi-trailer that has two deck levels, with the higher, shorter one positioned closer to the front. The higher, shorter deck level is designed to clear the edge of the tractor unit, but can also drop down in order to handle taller loads. Stacking goods on the lower level is a great way to use the extra space for transporting more products at a time.

Step Deck Trailer Shipping

Step deck trailers offer three main advantages that standard flat bed trailers cannot: height permits, easier for forklifts, and equipment diversity.

Height Permits – One of the biggest advantages to a step deck trailer is that you can transport higher loads without having to apply for additional permits. Step deck trailers are designed to allow large cargo to be placed lower down in order to avoid height restrictions.

Easier for Forklifts – Forklifts can be loaded and unloaded, easily and safely, from step deck trailers because they are lower to the ground than flat bed trailers. This makes the process of lifting heavy weight safer, as the forklift driver won’t have to lift their forks as high to pick up the cargo and unload it.

Equipment Diversity – Construction equipment is one of the most common types of equipment transported on step deck trailers. The step deck trailer design allows for larger cargo to be transported much easier. Step deck trailers, when used in tandem, can haul up to 45,000lbs (62,000lbs in tridem), allowing large pieces of machinery to be loaded on and positioned easily.
